3M Food Safety recently made history and accepted a gold Edison award for the 3M™ Petrifilm™ Rapid E. coli/Coliform Count Plate in the Lab Advancements category. This is the third time a 3M™ Petrifilm™ Plate product has received an Edison award, and a second time that a rapid plate has been recognized for innovation.
We thought we’d dig in and learn a little more about both the Edison Awards and the 3M™ Petrifilm™ Plates to see why this matters so much to microbiology testing.
The Edison Awards: an honorable history
Designated for Thomas Alva Edison (1847-1931), whose inventions and product development methods changed the world and made him a household name, the Edison Awards have been honoring the most innovative new products and services for more than 30 years. They are judged by a panel of more than 3,000 leading business executives consisting of past award winners, academics and leaders in the fields of product development, design, engineering, science and medicine.
What it means to win gold
Even being considered for any level of this award is a true honor. The Edison Best New Product Awards™ are among the most prestigious awards that honor excellence in new product development, human-centered design, and innovation. Each nomination season sees communications from over 7,000 companies, and all winners are selected by a committee of hand-picked industry experts. Winning gold for this event is a tremendous honor.
We connected with Cari Lingle, a 3M Food Safety microbiologist who accepted this award to hear her thoughts on why winning an Edison Award matters so much in this industry: “The lab advancement category at the Edison awards means we’ve made a product that optimizes the lab. Because we’re optimizing the lab and their capabilities, we’re able to provide important results regarding hygiene, sanitation, and overall quality of the food that is being manufactured. About this year’s gold winner
The 3M™ Petrifilm™ Rapid E. coli/Coliform Count Plate enables the simultaneous detection via a dual readout of lactose fermenting coliforms along with beta-glucuronidase producing E. coli within 18-24 hours further streamlining the complicated series of steps needed by the conventional methodologies for the detection of these organisms.

Where do we go from here?

Indicator testing is just as relevant today as it was 35 years ago. Going forward with the changes in regulations, what or how you’re sampling may change, but you’ll still need verify your processes with indicator testing. It’s here to stay.
