Unique technologies power new food safety testing system

What qualities do you want in a new work tool? Speed, simplicity, efficiency, accuracy?

That’s what food safety professionals said they were looking for when testing for pathogens. So, 3M scientists set out to create a new testing system that met those needs. The result? The 3M™ Molecular Detection System –  a novel innovation that is getting attention and accolades across the industry.

The time-saving testing system uses Loop-Mediated Isothermal Amplification (LAMP) technology, which combines isothermal DNA amplification and bioluminescence detection. It utilizes molecular microbiology for pathogen detection and is less susceptible to false negative results compared to older test systems. The LAMP technology is creating a buzz in the research community, and more than 8,000 peer-reviewed publications about the topic have been published since it was introduced.

The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) took notice, too. They chose the 3M Molecular Detection System as the primary method the Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) would use in testing for Salmonella and Listeria monocytogenes – two serious pathogens that put food at risk during production and processing. The USDA FSIS completed rigorous, multi-laboratory testing of the 3M technology alongside other pathogen detection options and chose it based on performance.

Becoming a go-to technology partner for the USDA is a big deal. It means playing a role in curbing the annually estimated 19,000 Salmonella-caused hospitalizations1. And it means helping thwart the 1,600 cases of Listeriosis, the illness caused by ingesting Listeria monocytogenes that is fatal in one in five persons.
